6/19/11 ROW80 Update

June 20, 2011 2 comments

Uh oh, forgot to check in yesterday. But, that’s only because I had a very productive, busy weekend. So that’s a good thing. Didn’t do much writing or drawing since last Wednesday, but I did have two great meetings with my creative team, where we talked about the details of our WIP moving forward, so that was huge. Really looking forward to the next round of ROW80, starting to think through my goals, etc. Thanks again to all of those who helped motivate me through the last few weeks. And those folks can be found here. Have a great week guys!

Eat Well at Meetings!

Cha Cha Chicken, Santa MonicaMet with my creative partner Carlo in Santa Monica last night. Just wanted to post this to state the importance of good eats when collaborating on any serious project, haha. Cha Cha Chicken on Ocean Blvd in Santa Monica – Cheap, delicious food, one block from the beach, outdoor seating, table space to spread out scripts and stuff, and no one rushing you out of the place. We sat there for a good two hours. If ever in Santa Monica, be sure to check it out.

6/15/11 ROW80 Update

June 15, 2011 1 comment

Things are progressing really well, I have to say ROW80 is playing a big part in that too. Thanks to all of you who stopped by and left comments this week, it really does help.

I’ve been working on my WIP a bit each day. This morning I wrote 5 script pages and I’ve been doodling and sketching fairly regularly. If I don’t have time to draw I make sure to read a bit from my “how to” books, which I consider a big part of my creative process so, like I said, things are going well.

I hope the rest of the ROW80 team is having similar progress with their WIP’s. Check in with them here.

6/12/11 ROW80 Update

I’m happy to say that even though my first check-in was only last Wednesday, I’m hitting my goals and have been productive all week. Yesterday was crazy though, closing ceremonies for my son’s little league baseball team, followed by a team party afterward. And my wife’s birthday is today so I’ll be busy with that as well. Not much writing this weekend but things will be back to normal tomorrow.

Check up on the other ROW80 folks here

Author Alexandra Sokoloff’s Blog

June 10, 2011 2 comments

I just added author Alexandra Sokoloff’s blog to the list of writing links in the sidebar, and thought I should at least say a few words about it.

I was sitting at my desk one day at work, bored, without much going on, so I started browsing the internet looking for information on story structure, particularly screen writing and 3 Act structure. Man, when I found Ms. Sokoloff’s blog, it was like falling into the cave of wonders. I’ve never met Ms. Sokoloff, nor have I read any of her books, but her articles on writing are incredible. There’s so much content on her blog you can literally lose yourself for hours trying to read through it all. As an aspiring writer, her blog has been the best intro to writing course ever, and I highly recommend you give it a read.

When you get to her page, scroll down to see her list of archived writing articles on the right side. The first one is even titled, Start Here! I think the fact that she shares this information and simply gives it of herself is so awesome. She really helped kick-start my writing endeavors and I’m very grateful to her for that.

Now I need to buy one of her books, haha

Waaaaay late to the ROW80 Party – Check In

June 8, 2011 3 comments

Unfortunately I discovered the ROW80 blog waaaaay after the start of round 2 of the writing challenge. But that’s ok, I’m simply going to check in and use the last two weeks of round 2 to see how I do and see if it’s something I think I can stick with.

So, my measurable goals for the next two weeks will be to:

1) Turn my graphic novel treatment into a script by writing at least one script page per day (This has been a WIP for several months now. I cruised though the outline and treatment phases, wrote 5 pages of the script and then just stopped for some reason. I think maybe I got scared or something. Just all of a sudden I put the brakes on the whole thing and can’t seem to face it anymore, strange.)

2) Draw every day (This could be a little or a lot. I may quickly sketch a rough panel layout or meticulously focus on a single panel, but I need to get in the habit of drawing every day.)

That’s it guys, for the next two weeks I want to be a writing/drawing fool. I’m really struggling with a bit of stare-out-the-window-itis, so whatever encouragement you could provide would be more than appreciated. I think I caught a bit of that depression bug that’s been going around too, so “boo-hoo’s” and “poor me’s” for everyone, I’m buyin.
